Sukhy Hullait
ALL THE RAGE

22 March to 26 April 2024
Opening: Friday 22 March 5 - 8pm

“I want people to see that the people here are important. I want the audience to really see them.”
- Sukhy Hullait

School Gallery is pleased to present All The Rage, an exhibition by award winning photographer Sukhy Hullait. Winner of the 2022 Portrait of Britain Award and 2023 Sony World Photography Award. He is a photographic storyteller known for his long-form work on marginalised individuals and social issues. Young Carers 2019 focused on a 10 year old carer in South London, Zahra, and 100 Days of Brexit 2019 saw Hullait travelling through Britain interviewing and photographing residents around the country asking how and why they voted in the referendum. He sought to create an unbiased account at a time when it was so easy to make bold assumptions about others based on class or race.

All The Rage is an ongoing project in which Hullait captures local residence in Peckham and East Dulwich, the ever changing south London suburbs where Hullait has resided since the early 90’s. He captures intimate moments of innocence, of vulnerability, a wry smile or beautified pose or as Joey Levenson wrote in It’s Nice That “Real people in real places, in their actual comfort zones.” Hullait states that he wants people to really see the people in his photographs. This is possible because he sees them. His work is made through engagement, by stopping to ask a question, to say hello, by being intrigued by the everyday and sharing a way of seeing a world of wonder and beauty on your doorstep.

For All The Rage, Hullaits first major solo exhibition, he will be bringing together a selection of prize winning portraits. Beth, winner of the 2022 Portrait of Britain Award; Mateo and Ida previously shortlisted for the same prize in 2020 and 2021. Gloria, featured in the 2023 Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize at The National Portrait Gallery and Charlie, Winner of the 2023 Sony World Photography Award 2023. A limited edition portfolio of All The Rage will be available exclusively from School Gallery. Contact the gallery for details.
